A father-of-two was stabbed in the heart and killed as he tried to break up a violent fight between his friends and two others during a house party, a court has heard.
Marcus Ramsay had attempted to intervene in a brawl between his half-brother and two teenagers after one of them had allegedly slashed his cousin down the chest just 15 minutes earlier, a jury was told.
Sheffield Crown Court heard Mr Ramsay had been at the party with his cousin and his half-brother on August 7, 2020.
By 1.20am he was at the Northern General Hospital where he was declared dead by medics having suffered a single blow to his heart, reports Sheffield Live.
He said: “The defendants, Isaac Ramsey and Ruben Moreno are friends. They were 17 at the time and they were just two of the people who turned up at Horninglow Road just after 11pm.”
“Also present that night were Shakeel Jabbaar with one of his cousins Marcus Ramsay.”
Mr Brooke added that Mr Ramsay’s half-brother Montell Williams was also present at the party.
He said: “By 12.30am Shakeel Jabbar had been slashed down his chest with one knife and his cousin had been stabbed to death with another knife.”
Mr Brooke added: “Montell Williams was nearby. He was in the back garden when he realised what had happened to his friend and the witnesses say he became very angry.”
Jurors were told how the brawl had spilled out onto the street outside the house and Mr Williams was on the opposite side of the street to Ramsey and Moreno.
Mr Brooke said: “By that time at 12.30am, Montell Williams was on one side of the street. Isaac Ramsey and Ruben Moreno were on the other side of the street and there was a bit of a confrontation and a stand-off.
“In the middle of this confrontation, we see on CCTV, that Marcus Ramsay came down the street towards where this was happening, and we see him trying to pull Montell Williams, his half-brother back.
“There were witnesses around. They say Isaac Ramsey was holding a knife. You will see when we watch the CCTV in particular Isaac Ramsey gesturing towards Montell Williams and Marcus Ramsay and you can also see on the video Ruben Moreno was stood next to Isaac Ramsey with his hand poised and ready on his right hip where he also had a knife.”
Mr Brooke said the “trigger” was Mr Williams throwing a bottle at the two teenagers, prompting the pair to run across the street – as Moreno held a knife in his right hand.
He said: “Montell Williams ran away up the street, he got away from them. But when Marcus Ramsay tried to intervene, Ruben Moreno, with his knife, stabbed him to death with that blow.”
Mr Brooke added that the two friends ran away in separate directions, stating that a knife was found with Mr Ramsay’s blood on the handle.
A second knife, which the prosecution say was left under a car in the street by Ramsey, was found with Mr Jabbaar’s DNA on its tip.
Mr Brooke told jurors: “Both defendants went on the run and neither was arrested until some weeks later. When they were finally arrested, they were interviewed but both made no comments to any questions.
“Ruben Moreno now admits he did have a knife that night and he used it to stab Marcus Ramsay to death but he now claims he was acting in self-defence.”
Mr Brooke said that while Moreno delivered the fatal blow, Ramsey is equally responsible for the death of Mr Ramsay having acted together with his friend.
Ramsey denies having a knife at all that night or that he is responsible for the slashing.
Mr Brooke also added that Ramsey is also charged in relation to a separate stabbing in December 20, 2019, which happened moments after a car crash he had been involved in.
Moreno, of Aldfield Way, Sheffield, denies a single charge of murder.
Ramsey denies murder, two counts of wounding with intent and possession of an article with a blade or point.
